KID'S CORNER
I've been working with a team of gifted kiddos at Gilchrist Elementary since the beginning of
this calendar year. We started out as a team to compete in Odyssey of the Mind, but when we didn't
make it past regionals, these guys decided to use their creative and critical thinking to put on a
show for the community.
They've been working hard for the past several weeks to make this show a reality. Please
consider this your invitation to join us as their work comes to fruition: details in the calendar
section!
It's super easy for gifted kids to get bored in the lazy days of summertime. What do you do to
alleviate that boredom? What can we do together? I'd love to put on another play, or we could
visit museums or theme parks or bookstores or a jillion other things. Let me know what you'd like
to see happening for gifted kids in the summer, and we'll work to make it happen!
Did you know that even kids and teens can get published in the Mensa Bulletin? Check out the
upcoming themes and send in some of your own writing -- see your name in lights! :-)
Submissions must be 1,000 words or less, typed, and must be received before the 15th of the month
six weeks prior to the issue date, i.e., July 15 for the September issue. If you have them,
include photos or other artwork to illustrate your article. The Bulletin prefers .jpg or .tif
files at 300 dpi for photos and Word email attachments for articles. Email to
BulletinEditor@us.mensa.org or mail to Mensa Bulletin, 1229 Corporate Drive W., Arlington TX 76006.
Submitting an article does not guarantee that it will run - all stories must match the issue's theme
and must be of interest to a wide audience.
Upcoming themes:
June: Fairy Tales Not only for children, they teach us time-honored morals and warn us of evils. What did your favorite fairy tale tell you about life? Was it correct?
July: The Law: Help or Hindrance? Has their formulation and sheer volume become so micromanaged that they interfere with our day-to-day lives? Would fewer laws be better? What would you change?
August: Advertising Unrelenting, inane, stupid, ineffective. The commercials aired during the Super Bowl are great, but some of the other advertising we're exposed to during the year -- both in print and on TV, radio and the Internet -- can be accurately called stupid, inane, offensive and more as they prey on our perceived inadequacies. What's good and what's bad about this aspect of corporate America?
September: "I used to be ___, but now I'm ___." What significant changes have you made in your appearance, lifestyle or attitudes that have bettered (or worsened) your life?
October: Motion Pictures/Television Have these major sources of persuasion and entertainment skewed too far to the left/right? Or do we take them far more seriously than we should? Beneath the tinsel, is there anything but more tinsel?
November/December: Potpourri Like the title says, a mixture. The collection of articles we get each year that are too good to pass up, but just don't seem to fit into any theme issues.
